About this Website
This website attempts to document the history of an organisation that was formed four years after Port Phillip was settled by Europeans. This story is closely entwined with the story of an emerging city and the lives, cultural ties and aspirations of its people.
As the collection of in-house records is small, information has been gathered from a range of other sources including published books, documents and images from various archives and libraries, and captured memories. Much of the information and articles, essays and ideas have been supplied by many friends, volunteers and acquaintances of the Melbourne Athenaeum, to whom grateful thanks are due.
We can only tell part of our story here. In 2009, 'The Melbourne Athenaeum: A Journal of the history of a Melbourne institution' was published to coincide with the organisation's 170th anniversary. The journal contains longer articles and more information about people and events that have been significant to both the Athenaeum and the development of Melbourne. Copies are available for purchase from the library and from selected bookstores.
The Melbourne Athenaeum is run by a volunteer Committee of Management which employs administrative staff.
