A decorative bookweight placed in the centre of an open book to hold the pages during the cataloguing process.

Document box of the Melbourne Mechanics' Institution with droplets of red sealing wax on the top.

An Exactus calculator from the 1950s, a mechanical pocket calculator for the addition and subtraction of pounds, shillings and pence.

A time capsule originally buried in 1872, located during the 1924 renovations. The contents were added to a new capsule and buried under the foundation stone.

A variety of coloured inks were kept by the institution, red was mainly used by the bookkeeper.
